Short answer
A traditional 1D laser scanner generally cannot read Data Matrix or QR Code symbols. A camera-based area imager can capture 2D barcodes, but capture capability is only the first layer of readiness.
The scanner must identify and decode the intended symbology and data syntax, transmit the right characters through its configured interface, and work with software that can interpret the GTIN and any lot, expiry, serial, or web-linked data.
GS1's retail implementation guidance notes that imaging scanners may need configuration or software updates, and not every imaging scanner can support every required mode. Record the exact model and run a controlled test before assuming the hardware should be replaced.
Use the model specification and a controlled test as the source of truth. Physical appearance alone is not enough to confirm capability.

Three readiness layers
Layer 1
The optics must capture the printed barcode at the expected size, contrast, distance, angle, movement, and lighting. A 1D-only device usually stops here.
Layer 2
The scanner must recognize the symbology, decode the correct characters, and transmit the result through USB, keyboard, serial, Bluetooth, or another configured interface.
Layer 3
The host application must parse and use the GTIN and any additional fields. A scanner can work while the inventory, packing, or POS workflow still fails.
Controlled test

Photograph the scanner label or record the full model and revision. Similar-looking products in one scanner family can have different optics, firmware, interfaces, and enabled symbologies.

Look for an area imager or explicit support for Data Matrix and QR Code. Do not rely only on the shape of the scan window or an online marketplace listing.

A capable scanner may have specific barcode types disabled. Review the configuration guide or ask the solution provider which 2D symbologies and data formats are enabled.

Test the linear barcode and every intended 2D option: GS1 DataMatrix, QR Code with GS1 Digital Link, or Data Matrix with GS1 Digital Link where relevant.

Capture what the scanner sends to a plain text field or diagnostic tool. A beep only confirms that something was detected; it does not prove the correct data reached the host system.

Repeat the scan inside the receiving, inventory, packing, or POS workflow. Check whether the software parses the GTIN and any lot, expiry, serial, or link data as intended.
